Creating your own personal website is a lot like when a restaurant creates its menu. They have to make it visually appealing, add items they’re good at, and most importantly, include things that make you want to come back. A website; especially a portfolio site, works the same way. At least that’s what it felt like when I created the So Fetch Media website. I learned so much during the process, and I think some of those lessons will help any marketer looking to showcase their work and expertise.
Choose an Aesthetic that Reflects you
When it comes to design, it’s important to pick a theme that not only speaks to your target audience but also reflects your personal “vibe.” For me, choosing the colors for SFM was easy. Green felt sophisticated but fun, and its many hues gave my site a consistent yet versatile look. I wanted something modern, timeless, and approachable; not overly trendy. Finding that sweet spot can be tough, but sometimes you just have to sit back and ask yourself: “What aesthetic represents me in my career?”
Keep it Simple
If your website is overloaded with links, features, or sections, people will get confused. A site that flows smoothly is essential for the visitor’s experience. You want people to find what they need easily, without feeling overwhelmed.
Upload Content that Shows your Skills
Your portfolio should showcase your very best work. Share projects that highlight your expertise, especially those connected to current trends or timely topics. That shows your network you’re not only skilled, but also relevant. People are often searching for professionals who are plugged into what’s happening now.
The Bottom Line
When it comes to building your website, take a moment to reflect. How do you want people to see you? How will you lay it out for them? And most importantly, how will you prove you’re a fetchin’ marketer?
